Are these bookshelves fabulous or what? This fun, colorful playroom has some really cool bookshelves made out of rain gutters! Image from here.
Check out Kimberly's site from Raising Olives for a tutorial on how to make rain gutter shelves. Kimberly is a homeschooling mom with 9 kids:) She gives great instructions - how to make and install your own shelves.

Thanks for the link Toni.
ReplyDeleteIn the comments of my post one of my readers suggested putting them in a bathroom, still thinking about that.
I must say, I would of never thought of this one! Very neat idea! :)
ReplyDeleteLove this inexpensive DIY idea!
ReplyDeleteCool idea! Never would have thought of it!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea so much I just posted it to my friends on facebook
ReplyDeletehttp://www.facebook.com/home.php?
I LOVE this idea! Its like your own personal library! My boys would love this!!!
ReplyDeleteWe have these shelves in my preschool classroom. If you're wondering, they hold up great. They have been there for about 5 years and have survived rowdy 3 year olds.
ReplyDeleteMy son's public elementary school believes in displaying their books face out and so they use these in ALL of their classrooms. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it and now I am so happy that I don't have to ask the principal how he did it:)
ReplyDeleteSmart thinking and it looks fab too, well done!
ReplyDeletewhat an incredible idea!!!
ReplyDeleteWow thats such a great DIY. Who would;ve thought rain gutters come indoors:)
ReplyDeleteAmazing.
ReplyDeleteI have a couple of friends that have these in their homes! They work so well and are easy to paint too!!
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering how to get my kids books up into their view. Now I know! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThese bookshelves seem so fun and easy to put up.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! but of course Kimberly is always full of great ideas!!
ReplyDeleteSo creative, can't wait to give it a try...
ReplyDeleteWe love this tutorial and have big plans to use it this winter!

The rain gutters sure present a new idea on what to do on a rainy day!
ReplyDeleteHi! I love this idea. Kimberly's whole site is full of fantastic, innovative ideas to make life better and easier for families. Be sure to check them out. Blessings! Kelly
ReplyDeleteAdorable idea - can a person who is challenged by diy ideas do this one?
ReplyDeleteI saw this idea on Kimberly's blog, along with some other great ideas. This is an awesome way to face books out, without using a floor shelving system, that is very expensive and takes up a lot of space.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea.
This is an awesome way to showcase the books we have collected over the years. Thanks for the "how to install" info-as I was wondering how to go about that!
ReplyDeleteOooh --- The picture with the bunk beds really got me thinking... we don't have space for something like this, or so I thought... but as a shelf for their beds, oh, I love it.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea-- I have wanted to buy a bookshelf that allowed you to show the books more-like in a library-but I never quite could spend that kind of money. Now, I can do it:)Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI really don't have any more wall space, but I do think this is a great idea! Showing the fronts of the books always intrigues the little ones.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Can't wait to try it when we move to our next house.
ReplyDeleteJust need to decide where all I can put these up :) The tutorial is excellent. Thanks Kimberly!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! The rain gutter shelves with books on display make the room look so appealing for children!
ReplyDeleteKimberly has a lot of great ideas on her blog that I have used. I plan on using this one for the tons of books at our house.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fabulous, innovative idea! It would have never occurred to me, but I'm going to try it now!
ReplyDeleteI am planning on doing this soon!
ReplyDeleteIt is an ingenious Design. It is especially wonderful for our little ones because normal bookshelves are so hard to stack books.
ReplyDeleteIt cleans up the house and looks really neat.
Love them! I've always understood that children being able to see the covers of the books entices young ones to "read"/browse them more often.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I think it is a great way to encourage reading.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I think it's a great way to encourage kids to read.
ReplyDeleteWow! I love this idea! It's so hard to keep books upright on normal shelves. I'm going to have to run this one past my hubby and I hope he is as impressed as I am!
ReplyDeleteCool!
ReplyDeleteI want to try that in our homeschool area.
Totally cool idea!!! And your kids' room is clean too!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea. I'm planning to put some up in my house. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI think this was very clever and inventive and I would love to see Kimberly win the prize for your blog anniversary!
ReplyDeleteGood Luck Kimberly!
C~
Yes these are awesome and definitely a cheap yet great looking way to keep track of those special nighttime storybooks we are always checking out from the library that we find under the beds and matresses when it's time to return the library books.
ReplyDeleteThis is GREAT because it's like those triangular stand-up bookshelves, but without the "footprint"! Awesome post - just like every other post Kimberly does. :-)
ReplyDeleteI totally did this in my house which means a LOT!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThese look great...but I wonder, with already having children who have literally tried to climb the walls...has anyone had any oops? :)
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome! Will have to wait until we own instead of rent, but I love the idea!
ReplyDeleteWonderful idea, these look great! Thanks!
ReplyDeletebzymom48kidz@yahoo.com
I love the idea and how much book shelf room you get from it!!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea and how much book shelf room you get from it!!
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea! My husband and I are...well...less than handy. But my daughter's boyfriend likes to fix things and build things, etc. perhaps we can talk him into adding a few rain gutter bookshelves before he returns to school in Jan. Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!
I love them and wish I could do it here...it's on my to do list someday!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea!! This would work well in my basement or my kids bedroom.
ReplyDeleteThese are an awesome idea. I love it! Raising Olives is a great site with lots of useful info.
ReplyDeleteHi, I am the one who suggested to put these in bathroom (or reading room) - but still haven't gotten it done yet. Just been abusy fall. But I will be working on this project right after Christmas.
ReplyDeleteWish I had found these when my children were young.
ReplyDeleteWhat a crazy awesome idea! I will have to put my hubby to work to make some for our four kiddos!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! I am trying to figure out where to use this idea in my house. They look great!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! Love Kimberly's blog, too! I'm not a homeschooler, but my kids still spend plenty of time at home playing and her ideas always help out!
ReplyDeleteI will use shelves like these if I ever homeschool!
ReplyDeleteThese are a wonderful idea, a great way to be able for the kids to see so they choose books from the covers instead of the bindings (which mine can't read yet).
ReplyDeletePlanning to put these beside each bunk for Christmas. Anyone ever painted theirs?
ReplyDeleteused to own a guttering company ... never dreamed of installing them like this! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteThis one gets my vote. It's economical, creative and I so want to put some up in our new home!
ReplyDeleteI love these shelves!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea! Love the shelves!
ReplyDeleteI have had this idea bookmarked for awhile now! I think this idea is fabulous!!
ReplyDeleteI can see myself doing this! Great idea.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for something similar to this to use to creatively display the books (that I think are multiplying and slowly taking over my house). And this is perfect! I'm thinking about putting some up and painting them too. Thank you so much Kimberly!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome!!! My husband and I are gonna start building a house pretty soon with ((( A BONUS ROOM!))) I'm so excited. I would definitely love these book shelves for all my little guy's books. Good Luck to you!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun and creative idea! I love it. Not only is it inexpensive, it looks neat and is sure to gain positive comments from guests! I am very impressed and would like to try this out in my own home as well :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to make these!

ReplyDeleteLove it. May have to give that a try for my little ones. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love how easy and versatile these are.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I bet these gutters are easier to clean than mine. Way to go Kimberly.
ReplyDeleteI liked this the first time I noticed it on Kimberly's blog. Overall, this is my favorite design. If we had fewer books we would definitely be doing this. I'm still trying to think of where we have enough wall space not taken up by windows or regular bookcases to use this idea!
ReplyDeleteThat sure is one cute kid reading a book in that photo. He is as handsome as his father! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing use of space!!!! GO KIMBERLY!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo creative...great idea!
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing idea. I have been searching for something (inexpensive) to put next to my kids bookshelves!!
ReplyDeleteI've seen them in person and they are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteWe used this idea in our school room and one of our daughters rooms....We love, love, love them.We plan on making more. Thanks for the great idea.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. Now I just need the time to do it. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE this rain gutter book shelf idea and we've actually gone ahead and put it up in our daughters room right next to her bed. She LOVES it! We love it! :)
ReplyDeleteI love these bookshelves! It stops you from loosing books you forgot you had, and is a great artsy idea!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these bookshelves, I just found the raising olives site, and am in love with it!
ReplyDeletethis is such a great idea - especially since I'm in love bookstores and children's books. Now the only problem will be my little one wanting to read every book in one sitting (LOL).
ReplyDeleteI'm really considering doing this somewhere in my house - awesome tutorial!
ReplyDeleteOK, if I may brag, Kimberly saw these bookshelves at MY house for the first time. Glad I can be famous vicariously! Yea Kimberly!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! What a great idea! :)
ReplyDeleteLove this idea!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful kids and great idea!
ReplyDeleteThey are more practical than book shelves and more inviting since you can see the titles.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is great!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea!! I'm always looking for way to incorporate more books into our rooms : ) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea, plan on using it one day :)
ReplyDeleteHow great and convenient to have the bookshleves right by your bedside. I love ALL of your ideas, Kimberly. Keep them coming!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay Kimberly, I think I have decided how many rooms need these rain gutter bookshelves. So far the list is:
ReplyDelete2 bathrooms
3 bedrooms
the hall upstairs
beside my treadmill
Now to convince the hubby we need more gutters in the house than are on the house! LOL.
Great Idea! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI loved this the first time I visited Raising Olives! What a neat idea :)
ReplyDeleteLucy
Im starting to work on my boys big boy room and these rain gutters will definately be a big part of it. love it
ReplyDeleteHow Clever! I am going to try this!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this concept.
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! Raising Olives is one of my favorite blogs. I am still thinking about the best place in our home for some of these. I love displaying books face out.
ReplyDeleteEnticing children to read more...great idea!!
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome idea!
ReplyDeleteWe have these in our home and I love seeing the fronts of the books.
ReplyDeleteThese are great for encouraging kids to read.
ReplyDeleteI really like the clever use for regular house hold items.
ReplyDeleteRain drops keep falling on my head...

ReplyDeletebrendadeibel@hotmail.com
LURVE this idea! Have actually put this up in my daughters room and it looks FAB!
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite. I just started on the play room tonight and I'm going to see if I can pull this off.
ReplyDeleteNot only a great way for kids to easily get a book to read, but it also makes it easy for them to put the books back. Not that easy means that it always gets done....
ReplyDeleteThanks for this awesome idea! how creative!!! I love it! I have seen so many of the other things but never this before, good work!
ReplyDeleteI love this project. 2 of my kids rooms have vaulted ceilings that are to low for any of the really cute bookshelves I have found. This will work great in both rooms. Even though the playroom has standard walls, I will probably do this to that room too.
ReplyDeleteWe're working on the girls' rooms and I can't wait to see how I can use this idea.

ReplyDeleteI got my kids' take on this now too, and they are all for the idea of having a shelf like in the bunkbed picture. Thanks Kimberly! Awesome idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea!
ReplyDeleteI love this tutorial and really want to do this in my long hallway that is too narrow for regular bookshelves.
ReplyDeleteApril E.
Comment for day 3 - I decided that the bathroom ones will hold magazines, not books!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea so much, I am posting another comment!!
ReplyDeleteBlessings
Mrs. White
Still loving it!!!!
ReplyDeleteSuzanne said I should come up with the most random post I could think of. The problem is, I have no idea what to say right now. Maybe it'll come to me tomorrow, so I can post another comment! :D
ReplyDeleteGracious what a good idea!
ReplyDeleteI think kids would love this one:)
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!! so smart!
ReplyDeleteCan't get over this! LOVE IT!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea.

ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeletedusky23@hotmail.com
This is such a clever idea! I hope you win for the creative thinking. I'm gonna try this in my son's room. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I'd never seen it done high up on a wall for high beds. What a great idea! Hope you win!!
ReplyDeletewhat a great idea! These are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of using them in the bathroom, that was the only place that was safe from interruptions.
ReplyDeleteLove the step by step details Raisingolives posted. Will make it a lot easier when I make mine.
ReplyDeleteI love these! We put these in our toy room, and our three year old daughter is able to find the books she wants. I'm trying to figure out where I can add more to my house!!
ReplyDeleteCool idea, definitely encourages kids to read...
ReplyDeleteWow, would have never thought of this
ReplyDeleteI will definitely be trying this idea out for my kids.
ReplyDeleteHoping to put these in my childrens room for Christmas present!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea. Love the thought of giving them as Christmas presents!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I just need to find a weekend to do it! :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and well done too!
ReplyDeleteThis is fab!!!
ReplyDeleteLeaving another commment - and I still think these are a great idea!
ReplyDeleteWe love rain gutter book shelves. We have used them for years. They are a blessing to have and easy for little ones to put books away by themselves. They also promote reading because the front of the book is showing and more visually appealing than the spine. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! We will be putting them in the kids bedrooms AND in our homeschool room! I'm very excited.
ReplyDeleteGreat re-purpose for rain gutters.
ReplyDeleteLove the shelves! My kids often don't read books because the forget about them. Having the covers facing out like that would definitely keep forgotten faves front and center.
ReplyDeleteThis is on my "someday" list! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this idea!
ReplyDeleteAmy
This is such a great idea for so many reasons. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI still think I really want to do this. I might be able to find some spare wall space in the children's bedrooms. :)
ReplyDeletegreat idea!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on Kimberly's blog and thought it was a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteNow you can put your new baby book on the shelves with the 9 others.
ReplyDeleteYou have my vote for sure!!!!
ReplyDeleteDucky22@yahoo.com
Wow! I've always wanted to do this but thought it would be impossible. AFter seeing Kimberly's tutorial, I think I might be able to do this! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I can't wait to use it!
ReplyDeleteInteresting!
ReplyDeleteHmm, I wonder if my landlord would let me do this in the kids' room. ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea, and the tutorial is so easy to follow! I love that all those picture books can be seen at a glance, rather than trying to read their skinny spines on a regular bookshelf.
ReplyDelete"Gutterly" wonderful.
ReplyDeleteSure hope ya win-you can send me my commission check soon there after-LOL. :0)
Best Wishes!
FM Sheri
Hope you win, Kimberly!
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea! LOVE IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!
Cool, can you paint them pink?
ReplyDeleteLove the great ideas and cool rooms
ReplyDeleteI love these!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the idea.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea!
ReplyDeleteAnother day, another comment. I realized the other thing this would be great for - If I put the shelves up high in my 11 foot high ceilinged rooms, I can store homeschool curriculum we are not currently using up high.
ReplyDelete
