Decorating With Scrapbook Paper

Some gals are very clever and Darcy Watkins is one of them. She created this fun and fab wall for $13! Per Darcy, "It's amazing what a pad of scrapbook paper and some glue dots can do.

Disclaimer: I know for sure that those glue dots are going to be a complete pain to take off the wall later. I'm choosing to live recklessly in the now.

So I figured out how many sheets I needed up and across to cover the wall. Since the paper is 12 x 12, it was pretty easy to figure out. When I was doing the math, I noticed that I did have a few vertical inches left, so I left 2 inches at the top and bottom of the wall bare. I could have cut some of the paper to make it fit, but I really wanted perfect 12 inch squares, so I just left a little bit of the wall blank. I would suggest that if you do a wall like this you do an entire row across and an entire row down before you do anything else. Just to make sure they fit the way you want. After that you can go for it!"

Thanks Darcy for sharing your photo. Check out more ideas from her Smart Bottom Enterprises blog.

Another idea with scrapbook paper: Cut out large circles from coordinating scrapbook paper and attach to something sturdy i.e. cardboard, old vinyl 12" record (yes, those old things). Attach paper with spray adhesive to sturdy base. 3m makes a foam tape that is double-sided and will not leave marks on the wall upon removal. Use this tape to attach circles to the wall. The brown paint color: Ralph Lauren Old Violin. Stripes were painted with alternating gloss and flat paint.

Update: Here's a link to 3m double sided tape. I'm not sure if this is the one that doesn't leave marks on the wall - please find out before purchasing.

  1. I love this...and, if one of the papers gets ruined, it would be an easy fix other than wallpaper! Thanks for posting!! I might have to do this in my daughter's room!

  5. This is a fantastic idea. My 5 year old saw it and said "Mom! I want that in my playroom!" Works for me. Do you think you could do this on a mason brick wall? We haven't gotten it sheet rocked yet.

  6. Yes, to the brick wall. Just make sure you use 3m tape that doesn't leave residue on the walls;) Trust me - I know from experience!

  9. can you use just regular old glue? i want to try this with my room.

  10. I wouldn't use glue. When you eventually want to change the wall, you will have some hard work removing the glue from the wall. I've updated my post with a link to 3m tape. It's not that expensive and will relieve future headaches:)

  12. That is a really neat idea! The 3M stuff that doesn't mess up walls is called "command strips". My mom swears by them and use them with all of her decorating!

  15. I LOVE all 10 of the choices for best design dazzler, but this one gets my vote because it is inexpensive and easy - easy enough for me to actually do it!! Thanks!

  16. I didn't want to vote for anything gender specific. Having a boy makes me very peevish about these things. Girls get all the good stuff!

Anyway, I narrowed it down to two, this one and the rain gutter bookshelves, but I decided to go with Darcy's because of cost efficiency and ease of execution. It's a brilliant idea.

  23. I love this idea! I went out and bought some paper and can't wait to get started! However, my paper cost quite a bit more than yours. I fell in love with some from Martha Stewert at Wall-Mart.

  58. I wonder if the 3m command strips would make it "float" away from the wall awkwardly?

We are renting so we wouldn't be able to do anything permanently or to mess up the walls but I looove this!

    ReplyDelete
  59. The 3M strips & glue dots were a brilliant idea! I was an idiot and tried doing this with ModPodge.. what a disaster!! I ended up stripping off what I could, then wallpapering over it with textured puffy wallpaper from Lowe's, and painting over THAT! You're idea was MUCH smarter!
