Some gals are very clever and Darcy Watkins is one of them. She created this fun and fab wall for $13! Per Darcy, "It's amazing what a pad of scrapbook paper and some glue dots can do.
Disclaimer: I know for sure that those glue dots are going to be a complete pain to take off the wall later. I'm choosing to live recklessly in the now.
So I figured out how many sheets I needed up and across to cover the wall. Since the paper is 12 x 12, it was pretty easy to figure out. When I was doing the math, I noticed that I did have a few vertical inches left, so I left 2 inches at the top and bottom of the wall bare. I could have cut some of the paper to make it fit, but I really wanted perfect 12 inch squares, so I just left a little bit of the wall blank. I would suggest that if you do a wall like this you do an entire row across and an entire row down before you do anything else. Just to make sure they fit the way you want. After that you can go for it!"
Thanks Darcy for sharing your photo. Check out more ideas from her Smart Bottom Enterprises blog.
Another idea with scrapbook paper: Cut out large circles from coordinating scrapbook paper and attach to something sturdy i.e. cardboard, old vinyl 12" record (yes, those old things). Attach paper with spray adhesive to sturdy base. 3m makes a foam tape that is double-sided and will not leave marks on the wall upon removal. Use this tape to attach circles to the wall. The brown paint color: Ralph Lauren Old Violin. Stripes were painted with alternating gloss and flat paint.
Update: Here's a link to 3m double sided tape. I'm not sure if this is the one that doesn't leave marks on the wall - please find out before purchasing.

I love this...and, if one of the papers gets ruined, it would be an easy fix other than wallpaper! Thanks for posting!! I might have to do this in my daughter's room!
ReplyDeleteI love scrapbook paper and what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is reall cute! I am going to do this in my little girls room.
ReplyDeleteWhat an great inexpensive way to get a unique look! I admire your creativity!
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic idea. My 5 year old saw it and said "Mom! I want that in my playroom!" Works for me. Do you think you could do this on a mason brick wall? We haven't gotten it sheet rocked yet.
ReplyDeleteYes, to the brick wall. Just make sure you use 3m tape that doesn't leave residue on the walls;) Trust me - I know from experience!
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely fabulous idea! I have been looking for something for our toy room, think I may have found it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice on 3M, I'm definitely looking into getting this done soon~
ReplyDeletecan you use just regular old glue? i want to try this with my room.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't use glue. When you eventually want to change the wall, you will have some hard work removing the glue from the wall. I've updated my post with a link to 3m tape. It's not that expensive and will relieve future headaches:)
ReplyDeleteOH how AWESOME! I wonder what would happen if ya just decoupaged it right on up there... OH! and the kick part of stairs~this would be GREAT there, alternating patterns~*THANK YOU!* for the ideas!!!! (((((HUGS))))) sandi
ReplyDeleteThat is a really neat idea! The 3M stuff that doesn't mess up walls is called "command strips". My mom swears by them and use them with all of her decorating!
ReplyDeleteTHIS is the greatest idea. As soon as we're not renting, I'm definitely doin this!
ReplyDeleteI love this craft. It looks like a quilt, but made with a lot less effort.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE all 10 of the choices for best design dazzler, but this one gets my vote because it is inexpensive and easy - easy enough for me to actually do it!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI didn't want to vote for anything gender specific. Having a boy makes me very peevish about these things. Girls get all the good stuff!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I narrowed it down to two, this one and the rain gutter bookshelves, but I decided to go with Darcy's because of cost efficiency and ease of execution. It's a brilliant idea.
I adore the bright, cheerful look of this room. She is so creative and this tutorial is just another great example of that!
ReplyDeletereally cool and so easy to update, either all or part of the paper can be replaced. Nice!
ReplyDeleteSeriously love it...what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteSeriously so simple and affordable! Even better it is practically impossible to NOT find a paper to match every room!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea. SUPER cute & SUPER cheap;o) I hope you win the contest!
ReplyDeleteThis is the cutest idea ever. U have a unique talent. Since kids like colors and excitement, this is an awesome idea for an easy creative playroom. I think I am going to do this.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I went out and bought some paper and can't wait to get started! However, my paper cost quite a bit more than yours. I fell in love with some from Martha Stewert at Wall-Mart.

ReplyDeleteHow neat and colourful! I Love it and wish I had enough energy to do that to my own walls :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!!!
ReplyDeleteI like this design the best for me. Being military, we move every couple of years so this is a great way to decorate.
ReplyDeleteAre we supposed to go here and leave a comment to vote for this room in the top 10? I'm kinda confused, but I definitely vote for this room to be the winner! SOOOOO awesome!!!

ReplyDeleteOMG! must say that this one takes my vote. It was just this past weekend that I had a friend over for our monthy "scrap fix" LOL and she went into how she was remodeling her daughters room and this was what popped into my head...automatically, I HAD to show it to her, she loved the idea, she has already started collecting the papers for it!!! Great, great inspiration & a fantastic idea :D

ReplyDeletehas stole my vote! ijust cant get enough of the creativity behind this one!
ReplyDeleteColor combinations are endless! love it
I love this idea but I NEVER would have thought about using glue dots. I would have gone with the much more complicated and expensive mess of wallpaper glue! Thanks for a great idea!!!
ReplyDeleteOf course I have to vote for your awesome scrapbook up-cycling idea! When I first saw your post, I shared it with several friends because it was so amazing! I have seen starred it in my reader, and refer back to it frequently. I am definitely going to try this it! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI have checked them all out, this is by far the best, frugal idea.

ReplyDeletegreat idea love the design
ReplyDeleteI love this .... I think I might do something like this in my daughters room as a feature wall behind her bed. Thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful and unique. What a fantastic idea!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I did something similar to the top picture in my classroom to clip up student work on the wall. It made a boring wall exciting!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the 3m command strips would make it "float" away from the wall awkwardly?
ReplyDeleteWe are renting so we wouldn't be able to do anything permanently or to mess up the walls but I looove this!
The 3M strips & glue dots were a brilliant idea! I was an idiot and tried doing this with ModPodge.. what a disaster!! I ended up stripping off what I could, then wallpapering over it with textured puffy wallpaper from Lowe's, and painting over THAT! You're idea was MUCH smarter!
